Why do the Police use such questionable tactics to solicit donations?

4:20pm Thursday, November 16th, 2006 by Rolande

Ok, I still have yet to understand why it is that a publicly tax funded agency calls on me to solicit donations? Don’t I already pay them enough in my taxes and speeding tickets? They follow me wherever I move to. I got regular calls from them back in Chicago and now I am getting the calls here in Columbus. They always have tough sounding guys make the calls to intimidate you into donating, too. That is pretty low of them. Read more »

Net Neutrality (www.savetheinternet.com)

Save the Net Save the Internet! Voice your opinion to Congress in support of Net Neutrality regulation.

Over the past few months or so I had seen and heard about the whole prospect of the government legally empowering providers to pick and choose what content they wanted to prefer for their customers while relegating competing content into a virtual digital toilet. I hadn’t really paid much attention to it until recently, thinking it was just a bunch of bureaucratic hot air coming out of Washington and that it really couldn’t happen. Eventually, I began to realize what the real impact of this decision or lack thereof means to me as a paying customer and to the rest of the Internet industry, as well as the fact that the Service Providers are spending millions to lobby Congress and publish misinformational ads and propaganda about this whole issue.

I don’t think that I can stress enough how dire the consequences can be for every Internet user if the Government allows the providers to have their way and not regulate their neutrality. I think that most people who use the Internet don’t believe this issue will affect them. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Read more »

DVD Burning

I consider myself to be fairly technical. Many people consider me to be an uber geek, although I am not all the way there yet. ;) Anyway, after years of being sidelined studying and doing other more important family things, I finally have gotten time to deal with using my DVD burner for “things” other than archiving/backups.

I used DVD Decrypter to rip an ISO a while back and after it was completed I realized the source disc was dual layer and the ISO ended up being over 8Gig. Now I have a DVD burner that supports the Dual Layer -R discs but they are not exactly that cheap to buy and possibly turn into coasters or frisbees. So I have a stack of 8x DVD -R discs that support up to 4.7Gig. So, of course, now the problem becomes how do I make an 8Gig image fit onto a 4.7Gig disc? Read more »

Outsourcing is nothing but a political smokescreen

11:26pm Tuesday, July 12th, 2005 by Rolande

One of the hottest topics in the IT industry today is outsourcing, especially among senior management within companies where IT is not a core focus. I, for one, happen to be a current victim of this poorly thought out strategy. The reason for all the hype around outsourcing is that company’s management is duped into believing they are going to save a huge pile of money if they get rid of everything. From my perspective, cost savings can truly only be achieved for Read more »
