Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith
4:45pm Monday, July 11th, 2005 by RolandeSo, now I am back to being a huge geek again. I actually went and finally saw Episode III last night by myself. [A friend did back out at the last minute] Anyway, at least I don’t get ridiculous and dress up in costume or things like that.
I leave that for the geeks who really take these things seriously.
In any case, I was still really looking forward to seeing George Lucas’ last hurrah with Star Wars on the big screen and I wasn’t disappointed. Definitely a very dark film. Great story though that really tied so many pieces of the epic together.
The only thing I didn’t buy was how quickly Annakin seemed to turn to the Dark Side. He spends his whole life traning as a Jedi to destroy the Sith and in one instant he sells out for Padme’s sake? I think if they had worked harder to really portray the intensity of their relationship and the deep mind/body connection between Annakin and Padme they may have been able to sell that desperation move. But, I guess none of the Star Wars films have done very well at portraying any kind of romantic relationships.
The fight scene with Obi-Wan was amazing when Annakin is laying there with no legs and one droid arm and he is trying to claw his way back up and he catches on fire. Then the following transition as Darth Sidious saves his life and builds him into the machine he becomes. That was pretty intense to watch.
The only other gripe I have about the movie was that the space battle scenes were so busy with so much going on. You could not focus or keep track of anything. It was very annoying to watch. You never knew where to focus or what to look at. I have noticed that with each subsequent film that these scenes were getting bigger and bigger with so much detail and action that they are nearly impossible to watch. Although it is cool to see so much stuff going on, you can only take so much of it. They needed to spend a much shorter amount of time focusing on the expanse of a battle taking place and focus more on the action that the audience actually should care about.
All in all it was still a great film and work of entertainment. I’ll definitely buy the DVD when it comes out and finish off my collection. I will most definitely watch all 6 movies again now knowing the beginning and the ending to the whole story. It will be very interesting to pick up on all the things I have mised in the past.
