The Final Cut
4:23pm Sunday, July 10th, 2005 by RolandeI had seen this movie on the shelf at Blockbuster a few weeks ago and I had heard that it was rather strange. So, I really wasn’t interested in seeing it, until [Surprise!] my wife brought it home yesterday for us to watch. It is always interesting when you let your spouse go to the movie store and see what they’ll come home with.
So, I tried real hard to keep an open mind and hope that it didn’t turn out to be another freak show like “One Hour Photo” which Robin Williams was in previously. If you have seen that you’ll know what I am talking about. For whatever reason, Robin Williams has decided to start taking various disturbing / more serious roles in the recent past. [Maybe to prove to the industry that he really is a “good” actor and be taken more seriously, as opposed to just a comedian who tries to act in comedies only.]
Well, in any case, this movie still had a disturbing side to it. Since it was pretty much Sci-Fi it at least took the edge off. The overall story was interesting and made you think about the impact of having an implant that recorded audio and video of your whole life. But you could see the whole plot ahead of time. Everything was too perfectly staged and contrived to be even halfway believable. Although the plot was good and the acting was respectable, it just didn’t play out well on the screen. The whole movie was very dark and gavve you this feeling of depression and foreboding. I think there were a lot of directing mistakes and either bad or poorly conceived editing. Not that I am someone who can speak with authority on this, but I can definitely tell when I have watched a well directed movie with a good/believable story and good acting.
So, if you have already seen everything else on the shelf at Blockbuster, this one may be worth the time just for the questions and thoughts it will provoke. Other than that, it really wasn’t extremly entertaining. I could have fast forwarded through a lot of it and gotten the same value out of it and spent the hour to hour and a half saved on something more productive.
At least, I get to finally go see “Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith” tonight. That should definitely redeem this weekend. ![]()
